BANGOR- Bangor natives Chris Gaspar, Kaleem Clarkson and Erik Gaspar will be taking part in the 2nd Annual Bangor Film Festival later this month screening a movie entitled, A Call To Action. The documentary highlights the positive impact popular music can have on our communities and its ability to create social change in America. The movie will be featured at Peakes Auditorium in Bangor High School on
Friday August 15th @ 7:00pm.
While all three colleagues left the state to pursue their careers, the Bangor connection was still strong and they reunited to further develop their group Concepts4Charity, a nonprofit organization devoted to engaging youth in philanthropy through sports and the arts. "I approached Erik to be our board president while I was still working at Enterprise-Rent-A-Car. Not long after that encounter Chris expressed his interest in video production and developed the idea of producing a documentary. We flew him down to the Langerado music festival in Florida where he directed and oversaw the entire production and now we have this unbelievable product because of his hard work; I love you man", says Clarkson.
Combining music, behind the scenes interviews and concert footage, A Call To Action tells an inspirational story about how the live music community is becoming a politically and socially conscious force. Most of the project was filmed on location at the 2007 Langerado Music Festival, in the political hotbed of Broward County, Florida featuring interviews and music many prominent musicians including Dave Matthews, Bob Weir (Grateful Dead), Trey Anastasio (Phish) and Bela Fleck. Artists were asked to reflect on their support for the HeadCount organization and the role music can play in shaping American politics. Since its inception in 2004, the nonprofit group HeadCount has registered more than 75,000 voters- a rewarding task for a core group of volunteers who have in turn provided a voice for many young Americans. Michael Franti, jazz trio Medeski, Martin and Wood, members of The Disco Biscuits, moe., O.A.R., Galactic and STS9 also appear in the movie with each artist giving their own unique insights into creating social change through music.
The movie debuted at The HBO Screening Room in New York City on January 31st, 2008 and was featured at both The Bonnaroo Music Festival and on the main stage of The Langerado Music Festival, which drew 20,000 people to Southern Florida earlier this year in March. Currently, the documentary has been picked up by a handful of multimedia outlets including Concert.TV which can be viewed on Demand through your local cable company.
